The visiting 8th grade Mason Punchers may have scored first last Thursday, but
the hometown Colts showed their grit. Sonora’s 8th graders came from behind and
held on to win 16 to 12 at Bronco Stadium.
The Mason Punchers 8th grade team capitalized on an early Colt fumble and scored
the first touchdown of the game in the first quarter. The Puncher receiver
dropped the pass for the two point conversion, and the Punchers had the lead at
6 to 0.
The Colts answered by marching down the field on runs by Daniel Lankford and
Zach Badeaux. Badeaux then rushed up the middle twenty yards for the first Colt
touchdown. He also scored the two point conversion on a big hole opened by the
left side of the Colt line. The Colts had the lead at 8 to 6.
Tough Colt defensive plays by Dakota Daniels, Word Hudson, Trey Virgen and Toby
Garza put a stop to the Puncher offense. Quarterback Hudson ran two running
plays, threw an incomplete pass, another running play and then rolled out and
hit Jorge Villanueva at the 15 yard line. Villanueva scored and Badeaux ran for
the two point conversion upping the lead to 16 to 6.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Punchers scored again on a wild running play by
the quarterback weaving his way down the field. Again, Mason’s attempt to score
two points failed. The Colt defense held on to preserve their victory.
The Colt 8th graders are now 4 and 2 for the 2007 season. They travel to the
Heart of Texas to face the 8th grade Brady Bulldogs on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
