The outcome of this game was never in doubt. The Sonora 7th grade Colts
dominated their opponent from Mason on BOTH sides of the ball.
The Punchers started on offense. Michael Sanchez, Garrett Bawcom, and Sam
Powers put a quick stop to the Punchers. Powers slammed into the Puncher
quarterback breaking up a fourth down pass.
With the Colts now on offense, Quarterback Gunter Pennington kept the ball and
hustled 25 yards around the left side of the line to about the 25 yard marker
before being run down. Damon Evans scored the first Colt touchdown. Evans took
the ball into the endzone on a tough run after it looked like he had been
stopped short. Bawcom ran for the two point conversion after the Evans’
touchdown.
The next Puncher offensive drive ended when Powers blocked the Puncher punt and
recovered the ball at the visitor’s 20 yard line. Jansen McBride set up the next
Colt score with a ten yard run. Bawcom then scored his first touchdown around
the left side of the line. The Puncher defenders tackled the Colt running back
short of the goal line to stop the two point play.
There was no scoring by either team in the second quarter. The score at the end
of the first half was 14 to 0.
With a little more than five minutes to play in the third quarter, Pennington
pitched the ball to Bawcom, who took the ball into the end zone from 72 yards
out for the third and final Colt touchdown. Pennington then lofted a pass high
for Powers for the successful two point conversion. The final score was 22 to 0
in favor of the home team Colts.
The 7th grade Sonora Colts are now 5-1. The team plays its next game in Brady on
Thursday night at 5 pm. Get after those young Bulldogs, Colts!!
