JV Broncos Ground Eagles

By Nancy Glasscock

After the bye week layoff, the Sonora JV football team got back to business at Bronco Stadium last Thursday night.  Sonora’s junior varsity defeated their much improved counterparts from Junction 32-18 for a 5-1 season record.
Defensive plays by Chacho Mesa, Mikey Sanchez, Ryan Garmon, and Colyer Dermody stopped the Eagles’ first offensive drive.  Quarterback Ethan Morriss then went to work softening up the opposing defense by handing the ball off to Caleb Gonzales and Shane Patlan. Morriss’ first pass to Gonzales failed.  On the next play, the long pass play to the same receiver succeeded for the first touchdown at 5:26 in the game. Refugio Sanchez’ kick was good.

Junction and Sonora then traded the ball until Junction, while trying to make their passing game work, had a ball picked off by Zac Rodriguez.   Rodriguez took the ball about 65 yards for a defensive touchdown early in the second quarter.  A Junction defender took one in the stomach for the visitors as he blocked Sanchez’ kick.  The thud of the ball hitting him in stomach could easily be heard.
Again Junction tried using their passing game to move the ball and gain some momentum. Rodriguez plucked another errant pass out of the air and took it in for another defensive score. In the second quarter, Junction scored two passing touchdowns and closed the scoring gap to 19-12.

The Broncos responded with another two minute drill as in the Ingram game.  Morriss, not to be outdone by his signal calling opponent, drove the Broncos the length of the field.  He rolled to his right and lofted a high pass into the endzone towards Gonzales.  With two Junction defenders draped over his shoulders, Gonzales hauled the pigskin in for the JV Broncos’ last score of the first half with only one second left on the clock.  The two point conversion play failed.  The score at halftime was 25-12 in the home team’s favor.
Sonora tacked on seven more points in the third quarter.  Morriss faked a handoff to Sanchez, kept the ball and ran 72 yards for the Bronco JV’s final touchdown of the game.  Sanchez’ kick was good.

Junction had one more touchdown late in the game.

The Bronco defense stood its ground on the Eagles’ last attempt at scoring.  The crowd was thrilled to see Morriss intercept a pass and run 90 yards for an apparent score.  The play was called back as the ref ruled that Morriss was guilty of pass interference.  Colyer Dermody sacked the Eagle quarterback on third down.  Then, on fourth down, the last Eagle pass fell incomplete.  The final score was 32-18.

The Bronco JV team travels this Thursday to play the Puncher JV team in Mason.  Good luck and notch up another victory!!
